Filley, Nebraska Feedlot - Photo Journal

Spring of 2007 found many Nebraska rescues scrambling to save a herd of over 200 horses found in dire straights in a Feedlot south of Filley, NE.

The owners were for some reason bound and determined to send all the horses to slaughter in Illinois before the slaughter house closed. When the rescues found out about this herd; the owners gave them two days to raise money and save whatever horses they could.

I'm so very proud of the "Rescue Rangers" - Linn, Tandra, Christina, and Heather.....for doing what needed to be done to save as many as they could (especially the pregnant mares!) When it was all said and done; they had to stand helplessly by and watch the bulk of the herd be loaded onto double-decker semi's, to be driven to their grisly fate.

Sheik, Sahara (then pregnant with Miss Swan), and Ben all came from this Feedlot. I feel sick when I think that they are among the lucky few who are not on some French dinner plate now..........I wish I'd been aware of this when it was going on and maybe I could have helped pull a few more.

If I forgot to mention anybody involved in this initial rescue; please forgive me. Let me know and I'll gladly add you to this page! Also; thanks to everyone who donated to the Rescue Rangers involved to help save as many horses as they did!

Here are some shots Tandra shared with me of the Feedlot.

Yes - there's Sheik 'hugging' Sahara on the right.

They formed a bond at this feedlot which thankfully has  never had to be broken since!

As if they knew this was some of their last days on earth, many horses seemed to reach out to one another; offering comfort and what looked like Hugs. Simply Heart Breaking.
